Drinking enough fluid is not only about keeping the body cool. I first learnt about the importance of drinking enough fluid when dad was admitted to hospital after a fall. The doctors explained that dehydration can cause dizziness and increase the risk of falls.
Getting someone you care to drink enough fluid can be a challenge but it is important to keep them hydrated.
It’s important to note that individual fluid needs may vary based on factors such as age, activity level, climate, and overall health. It is generally recommended to drink about 8 cups (64 ounces) of fluid per day, but this can vary.
Drinking enough fluids is essential for maintaining good health and overall well-being. Adequate hydration is crucial for various bodily functions such as:-
Proper bodily function: Water is essential for the proper functioning of virtually every system in our bodies. It helps regulate body temperature, aids digestion, transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, lubricates joints, and flushes waste products out of the body. Insufficient fluid intake can lead to dehydration, which can disrupt these vital functions and negatively impact overall health.
Cognitive function and mental clarity: The brain requires adequate hydration to function optimally. Even mild dehydration can affect cognitive abilities, attention, concentration, and short-term memory. Research suggests that maintaining proper fluid balance can improve mood, enhance mental clarity, and support overall brain health.
Digestive health: Sufficient fluid intake is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Water aids in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, helps prevent constipation by softening stools, and supports the smooth functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. Insufficient hydration can lead to digestive issues such as constipation and an increased risk of developing kidney stones.
Skin health and appearance: Proper hydration contributes to healthy skin. Water helps moisturize the skin, maintain its elasticity, and improve its overall appearance. Sufficient fluid intake can help prevent dryness, promote a radiant complexion, and reduce the risk of skin problems such as acne and premature aging.
Kidney function: The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products and toxins from the blood. Drinking enough fluids helps maintain adequate blood volume and supports proper kidney function. Sufficient hydration reduces the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

The fact sheet suggests offering them food with a high-water content such as ice cream and jelly. Please check with your medical practitioner as ice cream and jelly may not be suitable for people with dysphagia depending on the level of severity.
Having swallowing issues, it may be necessary to thicken the fluid with a thickener to minimize the risk of choking.
Ask your medical practitioner for further information and to advise what thickness of fluid within the IDDSI framework you should be drinking.
